Theater Lab at The Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.
The 399-seat theater has been home to Shear Madness since August 1987 and is America's Second Longest Running Play. When The Kennedy Center opened in 1971, Washington began to draw the best of concerts, dance, musicals, opera, and drama to its five theaters. President Eisenhower proposed the idea for a national cultural center in 1958. John F. Kennedy had also strongly supported the concept, and after his assassination the center was dedicated to him as a living memorial. Designed by Edward Durell Stone, The Kennedy Center now presents more performing arts than any other institution in the United States. The Lab also occasionally hosts free Millennium Stage performances. 2012 marked an entire renovation to the Theater Lab. The renovation included a complete seating and equipment overhaul, plus upgrades to backstage areas, support space and stage access for performers. All the performance lighting was converted to low-energy consuming LED lighting. Check out the Time-Lapse Video of the Shear Madness set build.
